About the Role:
Medical Writers are directly responsible for the generation of high-quality medical copy, working across multiple accounts and projects simultaneously.
Medical Writers are part of the scientific services team within HCG, understanding key client requirements and ensuring that copy is delivered on time and within budget, but also proactively contributing to ways to improve HCG’s service.
Key Responsibilities:
Communication
- Understand the purpose and role of communications in the wider therapy area and commercial landscape
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly to different audiences through a variety of media (print and digital)
Organisation and Planning
- Keep the Client Services team informed regularly on project status, ensuring that any issues are flagged in a timely manner with solutions proposed and discussed
- Recognise that each of your tasks form part of a wider project, and ensure that your team are kept up to date with your progress and task completion, in order to action their own responsibilities
- Support the team with planning and scheduling of projects, ensuring status sheets are created and kept up to date and outputs recorded
- Demonstrable ability to work on multiple projects and accounts simultaneously, delivering quality work on time and to budget
- Comply with all project process steps, ensuring all projects are submitted in line with internal review processes and client-specific requirements
- Understand timelines, budgetary constraints and the importance of adhering to scopes of work, and liaising with client services team when work strays from budget or scope
- Contribute to the management of client review systems for your accounts
- Enter time and submit expenses by the deadlines set, using appropriate job codes
Scientifically Savvy
- Show a clear understanding of the core scientific principles as they apply to medical communications projects
- Demonstrate strong scientific writing, editing and data comprehension skills on a range of different project types, providing accurate and clear content, in line with the brief given and appropriate to the target audience
- Undertake content development with input and guidance from senior team members, including, appropriate formatting, accurate referencing and annotation of deliverables
- Demonstrate ability to craft a story from scientific data that addresses the desired strategy, incorporating key messages
- Support proposal development and attend pitches as required
- Attention to Detail
- Develop high-quality detailed medical education resources in a variety of formats, ensuring content is developed within the budget specifications set and that goals are set to improve efficiency
- Adhere to the quality control process and all work has gone through the correct internal review process
Collaboration and Building Relationships
- Establish excellent client relationships through attending planning calls in conjunction with the wider team
- Participate in account planning meetings
- Build effective relationships with external suppliers and key opinion leaders and medical experts to help develop high quality content
- Establish and maintain excellent working relationships within and across departments, attending and contributing to briefing/internal discussions
- Taking the Initiative
- Use your initiative to find and proactively communicate solutions to challenging scenarios
- Effectively organise your own workload, and understand when certain tasks need to be prioritised
- Maintain a working knowledge of pharmaceutical industry standards and compliance
- Keep up to date with the latest developments in your key therapy areas, sharing knowledge, important scientific updates and any medical/regulatory milestones within your team when appropriate
- Own responsibility for your personal development, regularly looking for other ways to learn and grow professionally by maximising exposure to new opportunities, making the most of training and requesting training as required.
- Demonstrate a good understanding of HCG’s service offerings and communicate this to clients
- Ask team members across all levels for feedback, and proactively implement learnings
- Assist junior team members with interpreting external feedback and applying learnings
- Identify and raise training and development needs within the account team, and put forward your own solutions
- Undertake tasks outside of the specifics of the job description where business reasons require it
Skills and Experience:
Essential
- Educated to degree level in a relevant science subject and/or 2 years’ relevant medical writing experience
- Proficient in using Microsoft Office programmes (e.g. PowerPoint, Excel, etc.)
- Have an excellent command of the English language in both written and verbal communications
Desirable
- Previous experience in a medical communications agency or industry would be advantageous
- A keen interest in working and developing scientific expertise across a range of therapy areas
- Ability to travel
